My Project for Peace Report
From May 22 to July 17, 2007 I worked with the Foundation for International Community Assistance (FINCA), a microcredit organization, in Nueva Guinea, Nicaragua with the objective of carrying out my Wheaton College sponsored Project for Peace. My time working with FINCA was an unrivaled success and a testament to the amazing results and experiences that can be had when opportunities are awarded and support comes from all sides. During my time in Nueva Guinea while I was interning for FINCA, 31 Village Banking groups were formed accounting for 437 new clients. Two of the newly formed Village Banks were financed by the Wheaton College Project for Peace grant and were banks which I worked especially close with. These two Village Banks contained a total of 28 “partners” (clients in FINCA terminology) and the totality of the US$5,000 allocated by Wheaton College to fund these banks was used. In addition to promoting, forming, and maintaining the Village Banks in Nueva Guinea, I also initiated and carried out special projects to address perceived critical needs within the population of Nueva Guinea. I developed programs to better promote FINCA’s social policies and better educate FINCA partners about effective use of loan monies. Working with the Nicaraguan Ministry of Health (MINSA) I also prepared and administered seminars covering basic hygiene, nutrition, and first aid during Village Bank meetings. I also started a potable water project which brought 25 ceramic clay filters to members of FINCA’s Village Banks in Nueva Guinea by dovetailing the FINCA savings program and my preventative medicine/potable water seminar.
